BRIXHAM SAC "hIS & hERS" cOMPETITION 1ST AUGUST 2010 Email received on 2nd August from my good pal Russell Farley. Thanks Russell, much appreciated. Here's what Russell wrote: Brixham SAC "His & Hers" Competition was held on Sunday 1st August. The winning pair were Rachel Farley and Ciaran Farley with a brace of Thin Lipped Mullet respectively 2 lbs 6 ozs 4 dr and 2 lbs 6 ozs 9 dr.
Rosalyn Farley also caught a Thin Lipped Mullet of 2 lbs 7 ozs 8 dr, which was the best fish on the day, but sadly she was partnered by her "Bad Dad", who also caught the smallest fish on the day. Their combined total was only good enough to take the "Runners Up" spot.

Thanks Dave, your input is always very welcome. Here's what Dave wrote: Charlie Dwyer is a Junior, whose membership of Brixham SQAC had lapsed. The Gar weighed 1 lb 15 ozs and was caught from Brixham Breakwater on Saturday 24th July. It would have been the biggest in the Club this year. It would have also won Charlie a prize in the Mini Festival. Alas, maybe next year! By the way, Charlie has now renewed his membership.

DOUG MOSEDALE WINS BRIXHAM SAC BREAKWATER BBQ COMPETITION NUMBER 1 Mike Concannon wrote: Sunday 20th June - After completing several angling related tasks to clear my way to fish on the "Skerries" Banks aboard Dave Harrison's "Gemini" on Monday, then go to Guernsey aboard Ian Noble's "Samuel Irvin 3" from Tuesday until late Friday, I popped down to brixham Breakwater this afternoon where Patsy and I wet a line from the relative "terra firma" of Brixham Breakwater. The best fish caught today was a Mackerel of 1 lb 6 ozs 10 dr, which took first prize for Club Fishing Chairman, Doug Mosedale. Nice one Dougie.
Highlight of the day was one of the lads fishing nonchalantly from the Breakwater. It took me a few moments to realise that his Girlfriend had written in lipstick on the back of his calves, in red lipstick, "So Gay", which amused the rest of us, much to his personal discomfort. At 4 pm we all returned to the weigh-in hut close to the landward end of Brixham Breakwater, for other fish to be weighed-in, none of which exceeded Doug's Mackerel. We enjoyed Burgers and Hot Dogs, cooked by club members on a barbecue on the forecourt of the club hut. What a pleasant day. Thank you everyone for your good company and food. Rob Caunter "Skerries" Plaice 5 lbs 0 ozs 3 dr Wins Brixham SAC Roving Competition Well deserved Winner of Brixham SAC 24 Hour Roving Competition at the weekend of the 15th & 16th May, was Rob Caunter with a "Skerries2 Plaice of 5 lbs 0 ozs 3 dr.

It was a thoroughly sociable evening with everyone "hyped up" for a good "nosh and knees up." The Trophies are many and various. Norman remarked to me that the number and sizes of top quality Trophies exceed most other sea angling clubs in the UK and beyond. It was truly a glistening display. Phil Hyde, who writes for the local newspaper, the Herald Express, asked me "I wonder how old some of those trophies are?" He added, "You couldn't afford them these days". The shore angling trophies were all presented to the skilful recipients, followed by the Juniors and Lady winners. Then it was the turn of the boat anglers, and after that the "Special" categories. Norman Berry, who as I have already mentioned elsewhere on my web site, is the England Senior Shore Team Manager, and Proprietor of Sea Angling News, the 24 page full colour monthly newspaper. Norman presented his Trophy, which he donated to the NFSA, (the former National Representative Organisation), several years ago. It is awarded to the sea angling club; the most successful of the 300 plus affiliated clubs who are now connected with the Angling Trust, which replaced the NFSA a little more than 12 months ago. The winning club is the club whose members record at National level, the most specimen fish of, or in excess of 100% of specimen weight. This is the 6th consecutive year that Brixham SAC has won this prestigious Trophy. Well done lads and ladies. That is no mean feat. You really can say that you are members of the most successful sea angling club in the UK, because it is true.
I have regrettably removed my report regarding the winner the "Codpiece" Trophy as the recipient is apparently offended by it and took the trouble to call me to say that it did not happen as quoted in the poem which accompanied the presentation. I'm sorry to say, but that's what he told me. I was rather surprised by his concern. It was a decision of the club Committee to award this to the person in question. I reported in good faith what was said at the presentation. Where's your sense of humour? It's only a bit of fun. The presentation was followed by a sumptuous buffet banquet of fresh crab, scallops, smoked salmon, chicken, ham, spam, jam and lamb, too profuse to describe, catered by another very talented winning Lady member, Shinta Nilawatti. Thanks Shinta, it was yummy. If I was not already hitched and very happy, I would be clamouring to propose to you. The way to a man's heart is through his stomach .... but you are beautiful too. After the food, live music was played by a local solo rock guitarist, surrounded by a plethora of electronic back-up equipment. Thank you to all the members, friends and families for the great companionship that Brixham SAC gives to every member. Onwards and upwards through the 2010 season towards next year. Brixham SAC "Best Fish from the Skerries" Competition Results Sunday 4th April 2010 - Mike Concannon wrote: I popped down to Brixham SAC club house this evening to weigh in my best Plaice, which sadly was not quite big enough to score. The best fish of the day was a Plaice around 2 lbs 8 ozs, which was caught by Pete Flavell, while fishing aboard Dave Harrison's local charter boat "Gemini". It won Pete a voucher for £25 in the Brixham SAC club competition. Pete's married Son, Paul Flavell, also enjoyed a memorable day when he caught a small Turbot, which weighed around 3½ lbs, aboard "Gemini". It's good to see a Turbot. They are a rarity in our local waters in recent times. Ashley Hopwood, took the Junior prize in the same competition with a Plaice a tad over 1 lb 8 ozs caught aboard "Gemini". Well done. Brixham SAC Wins Angling Trust Sea Angling News Trophy for 6th Consecutive Year Thursday 4th March - Mike Concannon wrote: I'm 65 today. I have just received the best news I could wish for, from Norman Berry, Editor & Proprietor of Sea Angling News and the England Shore Angling Team Manager. It is an even better Birthday present than my entitlement at long last to my OAP. The more than 300 recreational sea angling clubs across the UK, which are affiliated to the Angling Trust, (formerly the N.F.S.A. before it became a component of the Angling Trust), compete each year for the Sea Angling News Trophy, which was donated by Norman Berry, several years ago. It is awarded each year to the affiliated club which submits the most fish of, or exceeding, 100% of specimen size to the AT. Eric Gerrey of the AT, maintains records and sorts out the certificates and medals for members of the competing clubs across the Country. Eric confirmed yesterday evening, that Brixham SAC members submitted 102 successfully ratified entries during the past year, which is the most for any sea angling club. I am therefore proud to disclose that Brixham SAC and its members have won this valued Trophy for a 6th consecutive year, which clearly confirms the club's reputation as probably the most successful sea angling club in the UK. No other club has won this award for so many consecutive years. Norman Berry has confirmed to me that he will once again attend the annual presentation evening at Brixham SAC on Saturday 17th April 2010 to present his Trophy. I hasten to add that although it is my home club, and I do write my regular "Fishing Dartmouth" pages every month for Sea Angling News, that I had absolutely nothing to do with the decision to award the Trophy to Brixham SAC. It is simply awarded on the merit of numbers of specimen fish submitted, by an affiliated club, to the National Governing Body for consideration. Well done lads. Please give yourselves a pat on the back. Our collective thanks go to Norman Berry for sponsoring this Trophy and to Eric Gerrey and the Angling Trust for impartially administering it. SHORE ANGLING HAS BEEN TOUGH Report Received 3rd March 2010 from Russell Farley, who wrote: Shore Fishing has been tough! Members have caught small Huss, Conger, LSD and Rockling but nothing considered worthy of taking to the scales Best Pollack Competition Results - 14th February 2010 Best Pollack/Coalfish - Boat Only Successfully fished with the top angler imparting much advice to his crew mates who thoroughly appreciated his winning catch : Doug Mosedale - Pollack 18-4-12.
Moves to Protect Silver Eel It is a well known fact, that the Silver Eel population breeds in the Sargasso Sea. It returns to our home waters as a tiny Eel, known as an "Elver", where it grows and breeds, before making its own mammoth return to breed in the Sargasso Sea. In recent years the numbers of Eels returning to our shores has declined to somewhere around 1 percent of their former numbers, due to a viral disease, which has adversely affected their numbers. Mike Concannon reported several weeks ago on his web page, that the EEC is in the process of completely protecting the Silver Eel. It will become an offence to take or to kill them. This may ensure that those few Silver Eels, that become resistant to the virus, may in the future breed and multiply. Mike Bailey, Hon. Sec. Emailed yesterday to say that, at the Committee of Brixham SAC, which met on Tuesday 2nd February, 2010, it was decided that in future, the Club will, with immediate effect, bring in a voluntary ban, "i.e: catch and release. Possibly weigh Silver Eels, but always return them to the sea alive." This seems to be the right decision, in view of the incontrovertible scientific evidence. Coincidentally, on Thursday 4th February, a major seafood supplier removed Silver Eels from their product list: M&J Seafood has announced that it will no longer supply European Eel to the catering trade from end of March 2010 due to the species being classified as critically endangered' on the IUCN Red List. The decision to remove all European Eel from its frozen and fresh product portfolio comes as part of M&J’s continued efforts to support sustainable sourcing and champion under-utilised species. The company has also taken the decision to ban all North Atlantic Halibut sourced from ‘target capture fisheries’. Now M&J’s frozen Halibut steaks will be sourced from sustainably certified Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fisheries in the Pacific Ocean and fresh Halibut, will be sourced from Wild Pacific, Canadian and Alaskan MSC certified fisheries (season April –Nov) as well as Farmed Scottish and Norwegian suppliers. M&J Seafood is working closely with suppliers, WWF, Goodcatch and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to ensure its fish supply is not taken from threatened or depleting stocks, and is committed to raising awareness of sustainable sourcing in the foodservice industry. Mike Berthet, group director, fish and seafood at M&J comments: “At M&J we believe the catering industry operators and suppliers have an enormous role to play in supporting the sustainable management of our fish stocks. By refusing to sell endangered species and taking the initiative to help customers understand the issues and the alternatives open to them, suppliers like us can generate real change and help slow down and reverse over-fishing.” BRIXHAM SAC - JANUARY FISH OF THE MONTH & COMP RESULTS Boat : Graham Dryer - Pollack 16-5-1

Brixham SAC Juniors dominated the shore prizes and although the boat prizes went almost entirely to commercially caught Pollack, they won't be allowed this coming year, so hopefully we can do better.
