Mark Criddle lands a surprise of a lifetime - RNLI Torbay lifeboat coxswain Mark Criddle took a trip to Berryhead in search of Garfish. Question: What would you normally expect to catch as a by-catch of your intended species? You would think that he'd encounter Mackerel, Scad, Herring possibly a Bass but to his amazement he hooked into much more of a fish which turned out to be a cracking Sea Trout of around 8 - 9lb. Mark did the honourable thing and got wet feet and returned the majestic specimen to the sea. Well done mate!

Hi Rob, just an update on how fishing is going on my new 'Spot On' at the moment, I have been out and about doing inshore reefs, 'Skerries Banks' and wrecking. The inshore reefs was fun with loads of Bullhuss and Dogfish, no Rays as of yet. 'Skerries Banks' is picking up with quite a few Plaice caught along with micro Whiting, Dabs and more Bullhuss and Dogfish. Wrecking is also picking up nicely with good catches of Pollack up to 12lb so far, also lots of large Whiting with the biggest one going 6lb 3oz to Steve Ford of Brixham Sea Anglers which also set a new Brixham Sea Anglers record, a few other whiting also taken over the 3-4lb mark. The boat is going well and I have a nice cruising speed of 18 knots and burning 2.7ltrs a mile and 22 knots for 3.5ltrs a mile also pretty good and that was in rough seas, new props on the way should help improve already an impressive craft.

Saturday 17th August - Day 1 of the Brixham SAC Open competition - Unfortunately, good ol' mother nature gave the anglers a day not to remember with lots of wind and rain. However, some hardy souls ventured out and brought some fish to the scales. Tim Hoult fished off his own boat in Brixham Harbour to catch a Thornback Ray and Garfish. And Russell and Ciaran Farley done well when Ciaran caught a couple of Bullhuss with the bigger being 11lb 4oz 10dr and Russell caught a fine Thin Lipped Mullet of 2lb 9oz 4dr. Well done guys, hope tomorrows weather is kinder.

Monday 5th August - Brixham SAC members are at it again - Through the social media and email I've heard that some BSAC members have been into the fish again. Firstly, Jason and Shay Upham have had a variety of species including a new personal best Thornback Ray for Shay and two firsts for this year with Garfish and Red Gurnard. Secondly, Neil Burnell who runs his popular blog Braidrunner.com has been trialling a new lure called the 'Slugrunner'  which he's designed himself. After getting the first samples from the manufacturer he decided on a trip for Bass. It certainly worked very well as it accounted for nine of the twelve Bass he landed with two nice ones of 5lb+ and just short of 6lb. Neil is fine tuning his design and then they should be on sale then. Good luck Neil.

Hi Rob, I had a phone call from my mate Chris Martin asking me to take a picture of Rob Caunters specimen Pollack he caught whilst wreck fishing in the English Channel on their joint owned private boat ‘Charlotte Lee’. The Pollack weighed 21lb 8oz 15dms, which is the best Pollack weighed into the B.S.A.C. for many a year, it is also Robs new personal best. Whilst Rob was busy catching Pollack Chris concentrated on the Cod & Ling which he found one or two getting them to double figures, sounds like they had a good day.

Just to let you know I had a new personal best Cod today whilst out with Mark Criddle and his son Maitland and Doug Mosedale on their private boat ‘Anna May’ .
We left Brixham at 9am and had a steady ride out to the wreck with the weather improving all the time. After what seemed an eternity we stopped at the wreck
and after a few drifts catching Pout , small Pollack and a couple of cod to 10 lb  I managed to hook in to a large Cod and after a 10 minute battle the fish surfaced. After it was carefully netted we realised how big it was. Once ashore we weighed it at the B.S.A.C hut and the fish weighed 28lbs 10ozs 2 dms which beat my personal best by 4lb 10ozs. It is the best cod weighed into the club for many a year and a truly great day out.

BSAC member Rob Marshall proudly
displays his new personal best Cod of
28lb 10oz 2dr which best his previous
best by 4lb 10oz.

I’ve been out for a couple of trips on our boat ‘Sea Jay’.  Saturday, I was out with with my brother Phil and Sunday with wife Sal. Great sea conditions for a change but water very coloured, which made catching bait a bit of a challenge. On Sat caught the expected species as usual. Then we hooked into a fish which felt a bit odd. As we were getting it in we thought it was a Starry Smoothound but to our surprise it was a Spur dog. We were thinking it was a fluke (excuse the pun), but Phil and I ended up catching over 20 of them! The best was approx 9lb 8oz, a few ounces short of the BSAC record of 9lb 11oz caught in 1979! They all went back alive, as I read somewhere that they are a critically endangered species...is that right? Sal and I caught more on the Sunday and it was nice to catch a new species.

Tim Hoult (L) and wife Sally proudly
show off and do battle with some surprise
Spurdogs.

Brixham SAC members catch update - BSAC members Dave Fortune and Rob Marshall very kindly emailed to let me know of the recent catches by BSAC members.  Many thanks guys, as always your emails are much appreciated.  Here's what they wrote:

Here’s a photo of Rob Caunter with a Grey Mullet of 5lb 9ozs 10dms which he caught on his & Chris Martins boat Charlotte Lee’ in the River Dart. Rob then drove to the BSAC hut on the breakwater with the Mullet in a tank of water to keep it alive and after weighing it, he released into the harbour. What a great effort.  Also a picture of Maitland Criddle doing battle with an estimated  45lb Conger Eel on our Conger comp. After a great fight lasting a long time the fish was then t barred back to fight another day.

Juniors have also been out finding fish again. Shay Upham found a very good Mackerel of 1lb 14oz 12dr from the breakwater. Fish this size have been a rare sight in recent years. He also found Grey Mullet to 2lb 8oz. Brother Corey fished from boat to take a Grey Mullet of 3lb 0oz 8dr. Another junior member, Joseph Caunter, did well  to land a Conger of 55lb 0oz 5dr while wreck fishing. Wednesday 15th August - Brixham SAC members catch update - BSAC members Dave Fortune and Rob Marshall very kindly emailed to let me know of the recent catches by BSAC members.  Many thanks guys, as always your emails are much appreciated.  Here's what they wrote:

Just to let you know I went out with Mark Criddle and his son Maitland for a bit of inshore wreck fishing for Conger Eels. The wind wasn’t quite right for anchoring but persistence paid off and we settled down to do some ‘Eeling’ . After twenty minutes we saw a fairly steady stream of Eels coming to the boat. Maitland was catching a few eels to 25lb, when a different size eel had taken his bait and was giving him a hard fight. He managed to coax it of the bottom after five minutes and the Eel decided it wanted to dive back in to the wreck. Yet again Maitland managed to pull the Eel back of the bottom and this tug of war lasted fifteen minutes.  After four more powerful dives the Eel eventually surfaced and to all of our surprise it was a lot bigger than we first thought. The Conger was successfully boated and weighed and pushed the scales round to 62lbs 2 1/4 ozs which is twice the size of his previous best, not bad for an eleven year old. Today he’s is nursing a sore back & arms. All the eels apart from this one were released .

Mark, and Rob Marshall the weekend.

Dartmouth Plaice Festival - Day 2 and Final Results

Weather wise, day 2 was pretty much a repeat of the Saturday with heavy downpours and feisty squalls hampering the fishing but for the anglers that braved the conditions there were better quality fish being caught. The best Plaice from Saturday was bettered by BSAC member Tim Hoult with a fine fish of 3.29 lb which won him the 'Best Specimen from Boat' prize and a nice cheque for £75.00. On top of that Tim also had a 2.90 lb Plaice on the Saturday which also gave him the 1st prize of 'Best Two Fish' and another nice cheque for £250.00 plus a Rod. And finally Tim also won the Sunday Pool prize. Tim's wife, Sally, was very pleased with her husbands efforts.

Dartmouth Plaice Festival - Day 1

I went down to the weigh in of the Dartmouth Plaice Festival this evening and it was great to see the amount of nice quality Plaice that were coming to the scales especially considering the 'not so good' weather conditions. The current leader is Mr Kenneth Lynch with a fine brace of Plaice of 2.99 lb and 2.37 lb. The competition is still wide open so good luck to all the competitors.

Brixham S.A.C General Prize List

2011 Presentation 14th April 2012

Programme

Brixham SAC prize presentation night - On Saturday I was very kindly invited to the Brixham SAC presentation night. It was a great night to meet many people in the flesh who I've 'known' for years by photograph and emails. There was an impressive display of trophies to be presented followed by a cracking buffet. Amongst the banter, jestfull jeering, beer and buffet a great night was had by all.

Most notable achievement had to be junior Corey Upham taking the biggest prize of best fish for the year with a super shore caught Pollack of 4lb 0oz 5 dr. Other notable performances were Chris Martin with 'Best fish from boat' with a fine Conger Eel of 96lb 4oz 13dr, Sally Hoult 'Best fish by a lady' with a Blonde Ray of 24lb from boat, Harvey Bevan Jones 'Best fish by a junior' with a Bull Huss of 12lb 5oz 12dr and League champion was Neil Burnell with 967%.

The ever popular "Gump" trophy for the biggest cock up of the year was won by Steve Ford who managed to take a box of food on a wreck fishing trip instead of bait.

Neil Burnell (L) proudly shows his prize for the 'League Champion'
with a score of 967% and Steve Ford cheerfully receives his 'Gump'
prize for 'Best Cock up of the year'. He won the prize after carefully
preparing Scallop Frills and freezing them for a Bream trip. On the
day of the trip he took his prize 'bait' from the freezer only to open
it aboard the boat and find he'd taken a nice Beef stew with him.

Bet that took some whipping on?

Monday 19th March - Updated catches from Brixham SAC members - Brixham SAC member Dave Fortune very kindly emailed me with some of the latest catches of Brixham SAC members. Thank you Dave, your input is most appreciated. Here's what Dave said:

Members have been fishing the wrecks for a few fish. Mark Criddle caught a Whiting of 3 lb 10 oz 6 dr, while Steve Ford caught a Pouting of 2 lb 15 oz 10 dr. John Heather found Pollack to 12 lb 3 oz  2 dr. From the shore Jason Upham fished marks in the South Hams to find a Plaice of 2 lb 0 oz 1 dr and a 3 Bearded Rockling of 1 lb 8 oz 9 dr.

Monday 5th March - New club record for Brixham SAC member Shay Upham -  I received two very welcome emails from Brixham SAC members Jason Upham and Dave Fortunes who very kindly told me of a new club record and an update on member catches. Thank you Jason and Dave your input is most appreciated. Here's what they said:

I went fishing on Sunday with my eldest lad Shay to try for a few Plaice. Shay had never caught one before so we headed to a local shore mark to try for them. After a couple hours Shay had a small one, then on the next cast he had a good fish on, which fought well. As Shay was getting the fish in, I saw a big Plaice come up and we landed it. It turned out to be a cracker of 2 lbs 13 oz 8 dr!

We were back out on the wrecks again today with one of Brian Coles’ charters of a mixed group made up of locals and anglers from the midlands. Had a very good days fishing on the Cod today. Tim Holt fished really well catching Cod and Ling as you can see by the photos. Our best Ling today was 17lb for Paul Arkol from Birmingham . All the lads used a mixture of lures today with no one colour being predominantly better than the others. Back out again on the wrecks tomorrow. Thanks lads for an excellent day out and thank you for washing the boat out.
