I was out at the weekend with my lads Shay and Corey Upham.  We had a few Dogfish on the bottom and took some live Prawns to have a go for the Wrasse and Pollack on float gear.  After getting some nice Wrasse to over 4lb and Pollack to 1 lb 10 oz Corey hooked a nice fish which didn't want to come in.  After a good fight a big Pollack surfaced and we slipped the net under it.  It was an absolute cracker at 4 lb 0 5 dr and around 178% of our club specimen rating of 2 lb 4 oz from shore!  Hopefully we'll find some more in next weeks Torbay Festival

Corey Upham looks extremely pleased with his
superb shore caught Pollack of 4 lb 0 5 dr
which he caught from the Sharkham area. This fish
would have been rated at 178% of the BSAC specimen
rating of 2 lb 4 oz. Well done Corey.

Rob Marshall goes Conger Fishing with Mark and Maitland Criddle -  Report sent in by Rob "Rocky" Marshall of Brixham SAC. Thanks Rob your input is greatly appreciated. Here's what Rob said:

Just to let you know I went out with Mark Criddle and his ten year old son, Maitland and a couple of mates from the Brixham S.A.C to try to catch some Conger Eels and hoping that Maitland might be fortunate enough to catch one himself.  After anchoring up to the rusting hulk we realised the tide was too strong for Maitland to fish for Congers so he rigged up for Bream & Pouting to pass the time until the tide was slack enough to fish for eels.  We waited until the last hour of the ebb, re-positioning the boat to allow for the breeze to push the boat near the wreck.  This was the moment Maitland had been waiting for and carefully lowering half a Mackerel bait to the sea bed he waited.

Maitland Criddle 'bends' into his Conger
Eel under the watchful eye of his Dad.
All the hard work was worth it as young
Maitland proudly poses with his Conger

Within five minutes a Conger Eel obliged by taking his bait and under instructions from his dad telling him to wind down as far as he could and then strike as hard as he could to set hook.  Taking this on board he did exactly that and then the fun started.  We strapped him into a makeshift harness and telling him to pump the fish up quickly to start with, to stop it going back to the wreck, he managed to do this.  After an exhausting fifteen minute battle a 25 lb Conger Eel slid over the gunwale. What a fantastic achievement for the youngster and after some photos the Eel was released.  We managed to get Eels up to mid sixty pound mark, lots of Pout & a solitary ling of 16 lbs. All the Eels were returned alive to breed and fight another day.

We were out on the "Skerries Banks" today with a charter of 5 anglers. We had an excellent days fishing with plenty of Plaice coming aboard with lots of credit to the anglers for returning a lot of the smaller Plaice. All our fish came on Ragworm and frozen raw Prawn tipped with Squid.

Thursday 7th July - Bristol Channel Smoothound fishing with Jason Upham - Report sent in by Brixham SAC member Jason Upham who made the most of a break in the weather to head out for a spot of shore fishing in the Bristol Channel. Thanks Jason your input is greatly appreciated. Here's what Jason said:

I went up to the Bristol Channel a couple of days ago after the Smoothounds. I was hoping to get a double figure fish as I've never had one plus this was my first trip up there. I wasn't disappointed as the fishing was good. In the end I had 5 double figure 'smoothies' with the biggest bottoming out my scales at 14 lbs 8 ozs. Even though I think it was nearer 15 lbs this is a new personal best for me and I'll happily settle for 14 lbs 8 ozs. Once the pictures were taken all the fish were returned alive.

On Friday we went after Bass on our own boat 'Sea Jay'. Sal has only caught school Bass in the past, so she was really pleased to land one of a shade under 7 lb, then on Sunday Sal caught a surprise Thornback Ray down near Start Point of just over 10 lb!!

Sally Hoult proudly holds a very nice Bass of

Cod fishing with Mark Criddle & son, Maitland, and Rob Marshall  - Report sent in by Rob "Rocky" Marshall of Brixham SAC. Thanks Rob your input is greatly appreciated. Here's what Rob said:

We went fishing on Sunday 26th June with Mark Criddle & his older son, 10 year old Maitland. We were in search of some Cod and also to try to get Maitland's first ever Cod, which was a challenge in itself. We weren't a million miles from home due to poor visibility and a slightly strengthening Easterly wind. We had half a dozen drifts with two medium sized Cod coming to the net, unfortunately none going to Maitland. With the next drift and some minor adjustments to the end tackle Maitland hooked into what could only be described as a monster Cod dragging him down the side of the boat and nearly pulling him over the gunwale. Dad grabbed both rod and son and they managed to get half a dozen pumps into the fish before it dived into the wreck, where it lodged itself.  Unfortunately the end result was the loss of the fish .
Undeterred Maitland carried on fishing and three drifts later he hooked into another fine fish and this time luck was on his side and after an exhausting ten minutes he managed to pump the cod to the surface, where his dad safely netted it.

Cod of 10 lbs 14 ozs caught while fishing aboard
the families private boat "Anna May"

The cod went an impressive 10 lbs 14 ozs, not bad for his first cod. It was a very long Cod and well under nourished, for it's size it should really have weighed 15 lbs. Anyway, this fish along with dad's 1 lb 9 oz Pout meant they went on to win the B.S.A.C. senior/junior competition. A great day out.

Further report of fish caught by Brixham SAC members courtesy of Dave Fortune - Thank you Dave your input is greatly appreciated. Here's what Dave added:

Sean Coulson found more big Golden Grey Mullet in Brixham harbour with the best a very nice one of 2 lbs 12 ozs. Junior angler Sam Jordan fished the same area and caught a Thick Lipped Mullet of 3 lbs 15 ozs 11 dr.

Shore fishing with Jason, Shay and Corey Upham - Report sent in by Brixham SAC member Jason Upham who made the most of a break in the weather to head out for a spot of shore fishing. Thanks Jason your input is greatly appreciated. Here's what Jason said:

I've been out and about after Garfish. Its been hard going on them this year and normally June is the best month to get them but there's been a lot of blanks lately. I did manage a good one yesterday at Berryhead though which weighed in at 1 lb 11 ozs 12 drs, this being the best one in our club so far this year.

Bass Fishing on an inshore wreck with Tim Hoult - Report sent in by Brixham SAC member Tim Hoult who made the most of a break in the weather to head out for some Bass. Thanks Tim your input is greatly appreciated. Here's what Tim said:

I managed to get out late on Tuesday 14th June to make the most of a break in the weather.  Headed out for a wreck mark hoping to catch some Cod and we weren't disappointed.  I ended up with 9 Bass and 3 Cod with the best fish, a bass, being a 7 lbs 14 oz 3 dr. The other Bass were 6 lb and several around 4 lb. It's one of the best short sessions I have had. All fish fell to a variety of lures, as the wreck was a bit snaggy!! All the fish had been feeding on sprats.
