Every now and then a really simple but useful idea jumps up and "bites your bum".

A couple of days ago I received a telephone call from a long-time angling pal, Allan Thompson, to tell me he had produced and was now distributing a bait bucket for sea anglers.  I know Allan  well, and nothing he does, yes, I really do mean nothing,  would ever surprise me!

Allan Thompson, the inventor of the "Bait Bukit", comes from a long line of optimistic anglers. At an early age his father taught him the invaluable lessons of miscasting, losing equipment and keeping Tackle Shops in business.

He has maintained his Father's legacy, drawing large crowds of people wondering how he manages to catch such a variety of seabirds, beach debris and normally immovable objects.  Allan is equally proud to have passed these skills on to his sons.

Several years ago, I enjoyed a
charter trip to Guernsey in company
with Allan.

I watched fascinated as Allan
busied himself tying a specialist rig, which he reckoned would be guaranteed to catch just about anything.

The Skipper said use orange lures for Cod, so Alan tied on his boot - well, I suppose it was orange coloured!

Allan is the Secretary and Treasurer to a sea angling club and has the honour to have received the club's perpetual trophy for parallel beach casting - a feat that required hours of practice to enable him to cast along a beach rather than into the sea!

Allan regularly fishes the Bristol Channel and beaches in the South West.  He is insured !

His long term, long suffering partner, Sue Rhodes-Thompson, has spent a lifetime avoiding fish, other than those found encased in a crispy batter.

Her introduction to life as a fisherman's mate has been traumatic and which she describes as 'an education'.  Her once sparkling sense of humour has been sadly dented by the necessity of keeping bait in the freezer and the fridge alongside the Sunday joint.

Sue is proud to have now trained Allan, on his return from fishing trips to walk in the front door and straight out the back taking 'all the 'yucky stuff' with him'.  She is an expert at identifying fish species - from the guts remaining on her kitchen worktops.

Any way, back to the main plot.  Allan has invented a practical "Bait Bukit" available in either of two sizes, 16 litre or 20 litre, for use by sea anglers.  Despite Allan's best efforts, I really do believe he is on to a winner with this new product.

We've all endured carrying our fresh and frozen baits in a variety of leaking cardboard boxes, carrier bags and used newspaper.  All that is now far more easily addressed by Allan's "Bait Bukit".  I'll show you a couple of photos which will easily demonstrate his practical solution.
