ACCURATE TWIN DRAG REELS |

“Many fishermen put themselves and their gear through extreme conditions to ensure their success. My pals and I outfit ourselves with the highest quality fishing tackle that enables us to fish our hardest. When that trophy fish bites we are ready and most importantly, our gear is ready to capture the fish we’ve been searching for. Fish Hard!” I would be proud to claim credit for those words of wisdom; they encapsulate the thinking of serious anglers across the globe. Alas, they originate, not from me, but with minor alterations to disguise the source, from the foreword in Accurate Fishing Products’ catalogue.
I have fished with several top anglers during recent years who prefer the outstanding fishing reels made by the “Accurate Grinding and Manufacturing Corporation”, who are based in Corona, California, USA. On a charter trip out of Torquay just a couple of years ago, Norman Berry, the Proprietor and Editor of “Sea Angling News” used an Accurate Boss B-270M reel, as did freelance angling journalist Colin Davies, who writes the South and East Devon feature for the same magazine. These reels caught my eye for their un-fussy high quality design and construction. I’ve since fished on several occasions with Norman and Colin, who both continue to enjoy using their Accurate reels.
Within a very short time I saw that Dave Baker, another of my regular sea angling pals, was using the slightly larger Accurate B870M model reel. Dave still uses it on every trip we enjoy together. My good friend, the respected fellow sea angling writer and photographer Russ Symons, who hails from Plymouth, also owns one. Patsy, my Wife soon bought herself an Accurate B-270M and she loves it. Patsy appreciates quality engineering. She freely admits that as a child she did not play with dolls; her Dad taught her how to strip and rebuild a Rolls Royce car engine. She bought her own Accurate reel because she admired its construction. Further more, she does not allow me to borrow it. She told me it was far too good for me to use. I know my place. The Accurate company has been in existence for 50 years. It was originally set up to manufacture precision jet turbine engine components. They entered the sport fishing tackle market with the same precision minded, high-tech, spare no cost philosophy, back in 1990. Initially Accurate produced gaffs and upgrade components for other manufacturer’s reels before embarking on a design project in 1996 to produce the most technologically advanced fishing reels in the world. It culminated in the Accurate twin drag range, with clutch disks at both ends of the spool which exert more even drag pressure through their twin Titanium friction washers, giving significantly increased smooth drag power.
For instance, when line is drawn from the spool, at say 20 lbs drag pressure, it will consistently fluctuate between 19.5 and 20.5 lbs, or less, at whatever speed. Now that really is Accurate. Accurate build these reels with superior quality components to perform under the most extreme conditions. You won’t find die-cast parts anywhere on an Accurate reel. Every component is machined from solid 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminium bar stock. This material is extremely strong, with light weight, and provides superior corrosion protection and heat dissipation. Every reel has 7 Class 5 ABEC stainless steel bearings impregnated with Teflon which makes them permanently lubricated. The same bearings are used by NASA in orbiting satellites, which are not subject to repair. Accurate’s first production reels were rigorously tested on big game boats, day in and day out for almost 40 months, catching hundreds of huge game fish to more than 300 lbs. These reels were accidentally tossed overboard and retrieved during this time and still they continued to perform flawlessly. Their Platinum Twin Drag TM (two speed) and Boss Magnum Twin Drag TM ranges were born out of this pedigree. I’m pleased to tell you that I too have joined the elite band of owners of Accurate tackle, having bought myself a pair of Boss Magnum B-870M reels. These each weigh 22 ozs and are similar in size to an Abu 7000 model. The smaller B-270M weighs 20 ozs and is comparable in size to an Abu 6600. They are available in a variety of standard or narrow spool options with a choice of retrieve rate of either 4.6:1 or 6:1, whichever is your preference. Either is easily capable of taming the largest fighting fish on light line. None of the Accurate range of reels have level wind available, but their sculptured spool design makes laying the line, using your thumb to guide it evenly, a simple task. Every Accurate reel is individually serial numbered. The individual identifier is clearly engraved onto the end plate. I know I shall be very pleased with my own Accurate purchases. I know that my friends and my Wife, who already use theirs to good effect, are delighted too. The Accurate web site at www.accuratereels.com is well worth a visit. You can see an exploded parts view of every reel in their range, together with an up-to-date price list for every individual component, all of which are manufactured in-house. Accurate will mail spare parts to you by return of post at very reasonable cost. It gets better. On their web site you can download files which open into Microsoft’s “Power Point” computer program, with movies showing you step-by-step detailed instructions on how to strip down, service and re-assemble your particular Accurate reel. Members of Accurate’s experienced engineering staff are happy to give you advice on any aspect of the construction and use of their products for the cost of a telephone call, or Email message to the factory. If that is still not enough, you can return your reel for servicing. I know their turn-around times are very quick. Now that really is the best example of just how customer care should be. My regular visitors will know that my pals and I already use two-speed geared reels to catch very big, hard fighting Blonde Ray and Conger. I am now contemplating the Accurate Platinum twin-drag two speed range as the best possible solution.
